Welcome to Las Vegas!: This is not really a story about what to see and do in Las Vegas. It is an attempt at getting you around this popular city without destroying your budget. As with most tourist meccas, Las Vegas offers plenty of easy ways to pay top dollar for things that won't really enhance your experience.

When to Visit: There isn't really an off-season in Las Vegas, but some people try to avoid the blistering summer months. You're also wise to avoid holidays and spring break. One of the biggest annual periods (with prices to match) is NCAA Basketball's Final Four weekend.

Where to Eat: Vegas is famous for its many buffets, some of which feature exotic menus and extravagant prices. Map out your buffet strategy at Las Vegas Review Journal's buffet directory, where they display prices, menus and times of operation on and off the strip. Another tip: for one of the best fast food meals you'll have anywhere, visit the "In-N-Out" chain in southern Nevada. The burgers are delicious, the fries are hot and the prices are reasonable. Downside: lines can be long.

Where to Stay: Check out Phil Feldman's updates on the latest advertised hotel deals. The Strip is where most people prefer to stay, but cheaper rooms can be found minutes away and in downtown Las Vegas a few miles away. Priceline won't be too helpful here if there is a big convention in town, so look for last-minute deals if you're headed to Vegas during a busy time.

Getting Around: Public transportation is known as "CAT," short for Citizens Area Transit. More than 300 buses serve 48 routes and 150,000 people per day. Most routes operate 5:30 a.m. to 1:30 a.m. seven days a week. Some routes operate 24-hours a day. If you rent a car, be aware that gasoline tends to be expensive here.

Casino Strategies: The Cardinal Rule of Las Vegas: budget how much money you are going to gamble before arrival and stop playing when that money is gone. For tips on how to play the games better, check out Let's Talk Winning. If you're not a gambler, it's still worth walking around a few of the bigger casinos to take in the atmosphere. Watching other people lose money is free.

Beyond the Casinos: Hoover Dam still ranks as one of the nation's finest engineering achievements. It is within an hour's drive of the Strip. Tours are available from Vegas for the dam and even the Grand Canyon. Shop around, because prices vary greatly. Hotels often give guests discounts to on-site shows. Some of the best shows are free: the Bellagio offers a musical water show on the half-hour that you should see if possible.

More Vegas Tips:

The Strip is for Gamblers. If you'll be spending most of your time in casinos and shows, staying on the Strip could save you time and transportation costs. If you're attending meetings or just sightseeing, consider staying off the Strip, where room rates are often cheaper.

Remember that The Strip is four miles long. Some people start walking and lose track of how far they've gone. It can be a long walk back in the sun if you don't plan accordingly.

Hotel bills are the best place to economize. For many people, this is one of those places where you'll spend very little time in your room. Don't sacrifice safety or cleanliness, but consider just how important a grand view or a prestige address really is to you. For some rock-bottom savings tips, visit Sleep Cheap Las Vegas

Allow extra time at McCarran Airport. This airport is convenient to major attractions, so many assume they've got plenty of time to get there and get on the plane when in fact they do not. Lines can be long, so plan accordingly.

Take advantage of free parking at Strip hotels. The major casinos want nothing to stand in your way of their tables and slots, so they provide convenient and free parking in well-maintained garages. Some might want to search your car briefly as a security precaution.
